Tommy Dunn Memorial Cruise to Ocracoke

October 12 to 14, 2018

A special cruise is coming up this fall, the second annual Tommy Dunn Ocracoke Cruise. It is scheduled for October 12-14.

What a great time to visit Ocracoke, whether by an RSPS boat, another USPS member’s boat, or by ferry boat. Land Cruisers are encouraged to join RSPS members on this Tommy Dunn Ocracoke Cruise. A cruise to Ocracoke has always been an RSPS trip to enjoy.

The timing of a visit to Ocracoke in October should provide many opportunities to enjoy wandering around the shops in cool weather, make a walk along the beach more enjoyable without the blazing heat, and the area should be less crowded. Rates for motels or condos should be at a reduced rate, as this time of year will not be during the “peak summer rate” time.
The current plan is for boaters to depart from their home port or Oriental to Ocracoke on Friday, October 12. Some boaters will probably arrive in Oriental on Thursday, October 11 to allow for an early departure for Ocracoke on Friday. Boaters needing slip reservations in Oriental should call the Oriental Marina and Inn at 252-249-1818. This marina is the only marina that I have visited that provides soap, shampoo and towels for mariners using the showers --really nice. Oriental is a neat small coastal town, providing a nice area to walk around and relax.

In Ocracoke, there are at least two choices: reserve a slip at the Anchorage Marina, 252-928-6661, or stay the Government/Federal docks (first come, first served). When staying at the full-service Anchorage Marina, showers are available. The Government/Federal docks have electricity, water, restrooms, but no showers, and are less expensive than Anchorage Marina. If you have a National Park Pass, there is a discount for the Government/Federal dock fee.
In the event that the weather does not cooperate, the cruise may change and go to River Dunes.

So, no matter whether you boat over, ride the ferry boat, or even fly over, join your fellow RSPS members, fellow USPS members and any guests that want to join in for the fun, just make your plans and let me know who will be participating and how you plan to arrive so that we can make sure that you are included in all the activities.
